january diy : scrub a dub dub

Jessica Smith

now that i finally have a little extra time on my hands, i decided to get my hands dirty in some diy projects this year. from furniture to fashion to gifts, i am introducing a new project each month. have a suggestion for next month's diy? contact us at info@peacelovedesign.com

there is no doubt that it is full blown winter in michigan right now. from below zero temperatures and frozen pipes to snow covered ground and icy roads, its been a rough one! one thing the cold weather really takes a toll on is my skin so i am always on the lookout for a good moisturizer and a good exfoliant.

i like to use natural products on my skin and what better way than to make them myself?! so i did a little research and picked out a few different homemade exfoliating scrubs to try. here we go!

1. Lemon & Sugar Face Scrub

The Lemon & Sugar face scrub tightens pores, brightens the complexion, removes dull skin cells, moisturizes and prevents breakouts. What more could you want in a face scrub!?

  • 1/2 fresh lemon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (i used organic coconut sugar)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp honey

Mix the ingredients together and store in airtight container. Apply to face in gentle circular motions and leave on for 7-10 minutes before you rinse.

2. Lavender Salt Scrub

The Lavender Salt Scrub recipe calls for coarse sea salt, but you can mix it up if you want to use something a little finer. I used a sea salt that is in between. This is by far my favorite because i find it to work the best and i absolutely LOVE lavender. You can find dried lavender at a local craft store, usually in the soap making section. You can find lavender essential oil at a health food store, or my favorite place to find essential oils which is Aveda

  • 1/2 cup coarse sea salt
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp dried lavender
  • 16 drops lavender oil

Mix the ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Use as a full body exfoliant and rinse.

3. Vanilla Coconut Sugar Scrub

I know, i know, you are thinking this is my dessert recipe, not a scrub recipe! I am crazy about coconut oil in case you couldn't tell. I use it as a moisturizer daily, its perfect. I like this exfoliant because its super moisturizing.

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (i used organic coconut sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Use as full body exfoliant and rinse.

i found these cutesy half pint ball jars at target. they are the perfect size. as with any exfoliant, do not use on cuts, wounds, or freshly shaved legs. so there ya have it. three amazing exfoliants to keep your skin happy and healthy through this crazy winter! gotta be in tip top shape for bikini season... it will be here before we know it (can it come any faster?)

ENJOY!
